The National Gay Helpline Is one-year-old

Malta Independent Tuesday, 19 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The National Gay Helpline marks its first anniversary tomorrow. During the past 12 months the service, which is provided by the Malta Gay Rights Movement, has dealt with 121 genuine calls.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) and questioning individuals who need support can call on 21430006 and speak to trained volunteers who will listen to them and offer help.

The issues dealt with in this first year ranged from support for individuals during their coming out process to relationship difficulties, referrals to professionals, as well as requests for information relating to sexual health and LGBT social activities.

The NGH lines are open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6pm to 9pm. Normal Maltacom rates apply.

The Helpline volunteers have undergone professional training with Agenzija Appogg, and some even have hands on experience as Supportline 179 volunteers.

The NGH guarantees total confidentiality to its callers.
