Imagine 180 people (students, teachers and athletes) coming together from over 90 different countries, all related to sport in someway or another, in a beautiful green place at the heart of the ancient city of Olympia; the birthplace of the Olympic Games centuries ago.
I may only attempt to share the Olympia experience in words because I do not believe that words will ever justify it.
The diversity and knowledge this brought in our lives was incredible. These were two weeks full of cultural, educational, sport and fun activities.
We also had the honour to meet potential and existing Olympic athletes. Among these were Alisa Camplin acrobatic ski gold medallist from Australia, Andy from St. Vincent & Grenadines who took part in the 800m in Athens 2004, Alejandro Foglia from Uruguay who took part in the sailing competitions in Athens 2004, Damon Diletti who was a former Olympic Hockey silver and bronze medallist, Simona Tabara Amanar, gold medallist in two consecutive Olympic Games and several times world champion.
This was a great opportunity for us to see a less competitive and more human side of these professional athletes, the sacrifice they go through to achieve their Olympic dream and the sheer determination that is an inspiring model to all of us.
Sport became a common experience giving friendship a completely different meaning.
Through sport activities and the promotion of fair play, we all came together to laugh, play and share these unforgettable moments.
This came as a refreshing change from an often highly competitive approach in sport. More often than not, this leaves a bitter experience in our lives.
At Olympia, winning and losing failed to matter. What really mattered was simply the joy of being together. Our horizons were suddenly broadened and cultures bridged.
Throughout these two weeks we all were on the same level, nobody felt superior or inferior to anyone. We were just different individuals sharing one of the most beautiful experiences. This was further evident in the endless tears everyone shed at the closing ceremony and on departure. But the dream did not end with our departure. It was actually the start of a lasting friendship and a joint worldwide effort in promoting Olympic values.
