Floriana FC

The Greens also paid tribute to their former goalkeeper on their official website, saying that Malta and Floriana had lost one of the best goalkeepers it ever produced.

The statement said: “The brave goalkeeper will never be forgotten for his excellent history, spectacular games, positivet results and, most of all, his fabulous character both in his professional and personal life.”

Floriana FC also expressed their deepest condolences to all his family and closest friends.

Melita FC

The president, committee members and players of Melita FC wish to express their sincere sorrow at the death of David Cluett, a pure product of the club where he had started playing football at a young age and had established himself as a very promising goalkeeper.

The club extender their heartfelt condolences to all his family.

They also thanked David for those wonderful years he spent at the club.

Msida SJ

The committee of Msida St Joseph FC would like to salute one of Malta’s great goalkeepers of all times.

Club President Dr Kevin Deguara said that it was an honour for the club to have had Cluett – a former national team goalkeeper – as goalkeeper’s coach at the club over the past year.

“The professional way in which he tackled all his commitments made him a gentleman and we are proud that he accepted our offer to become our goalkeeper’s coach,” Msida said in a statement.

The club also took the opportunity to offer its condolences to his family and friends, adding they were sure he will be missed.

“Malta’s football scene has lost one of its protagonists,” the statement ended.

Birkirkara FC

Birkirkara paid tribute to Cluett on their official website soon after the announcement of the player’s demise.

They said: “Cluett, started his career with Melita FC, but is mostly remembered for the years his spent with the Greens, forming part of the famous Floriana team that knocked Ekranas out of the European Cup in 1993-94. He also won the League, FA Trophy, the Euro Cup and the Super Five Cup with this team during his 196 appearances with Floriana. Cluett is also remembered for spending 736 minutes without conceding a goal – a national record, during that season.

“It was Gencho Dobrev that offered David his first international appearance in an away game against Portugal on March 29, 1987. Cluett went on to play 69 times for the national team, including the famous narrow 1-2 loss against Italy of Arrigo Sacchi and the 1-0 win against Belgium of Oliveria, Michel Preud’Homme and Vincenzo Scifo.

“In the latter years of his career, Cluett had short spells Gozo and later joined the Stripes. Last season, Cluett worked as goalkeepers’ coach with Premier League club Msida St Joseph.”

Birkirkara FC together with www.birkirkarafc.com also expressed their condolences to the family of Cluett, and publicly thanked David for the performances he honoured the public with.
