I refer to Moustafa Megawer’s letter “The price for being America’s foremost ally” (TMIS, 24 July).
Although the author condemns the atrocious attacks on London, he firmly puts the blame and responsibility on Tony Blair and George Bush. I find these comments very incorrect, if not offensive. Such acts have to be condemned by every decent human being without any reservations whatsoever. No ifs and buts.
After all, wasn’t it Saddam who invaded neighbouring Kuwait to spark off the first Gulf War? Weren’t the events of 9/11 that sparked off the invasion of Afghanistan? Has the world forgotten the number of their own people that the Saddam and
Taliban regimes killed during their reigns? Since when are the liberators of these tyrants seen as the aggressors and these evil men as the oppressed?
Shouldn’t these Middle East countries have taken the example of countries in the same region such as the Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait when they were “free”, where, after adopting a western mentality, these countries have prospered? Instead, countries such as Iran and Iraq ended fighting each other in a very bloody war using various chemical weapons and killing thousands of their own people.
