Cricket – Skanska Summer trophy: Good week for leaders Marsa

Marsa C.C had a good week, firstly beating Leyland Motors on Tuesday by five runs and then on Saturday beating Krishna C.C in the Skanska summer trophy to be nine points clear on top of the standings.

On Tuesday Marsa won the toss and batted first. Mike Caruana led the batting by making 142 runs and was well aided by Sarfraz Ali who made seventy three runs. Marsa posted a good score of 262 runs. For Leyland Motors L.Shakleton took four wickets. In reply J.Rowding made fifty one runs, P.Cummings thirty nine runs, M.Waneing seventeen runs, M.Cotton twenty four runs and V.Jones thirty one runs in their total of 257 runs. Frank Spiteri was Marsa’s most successful bowler in taking three wickets. Marsa won the game but lost the series two to one.

Marsa and Krishna battled out the game for top position. Marsa again batted first and again were in the runs totaling 186 runs of the twenty overs allocated. Nowell Khosla made twenty two runs, Mike Caruana twenty five runs, Ronnie Sacco twenty seven runs, Desmond Don Paul twenty runs and John Grima top scoring with thirty six runs all contributed towards the total. For Krishna Pierre Naudi was their most successful bowler taking two wickets. In reply Krishna totaled 148 runs with Alan Kyle making thirty one runs, Robert Krishna thirty three runs not out and Javed Shah forty one runs. For Marsa Ronnie Sacco took four wickets. Marsa earned ten points for their win and Krishna earned two points.

In the second game between Melita C.C and Overseas C.C, Overseas won the toss and elected to bat. The Overseas batting missing several key players was not at its best. The only batsman to make any impact was Mike Smith who made twenty six runs not out. The Overseas just managed to earn a point by making 126 runs. Sunny Krishna was Melita’s strike bowler taking three wickets. Melita made the runs in the twelfth over with Rory O’Brien top scoring with thirty five runs, Nick Goff and Dameon Willis both making twenty six runs each. Melita earned nine points for the win.

Next Saturday Marsa C.C play Melita C.C at 11:00am and The Overseas take on Krishna C.C at 2:30p.m
