With reference to the letter of Paul Cutajar in TMID 29 July, I would like to point out that in no way is WasteServ trying ‘to shoot down anyone who criticises the goings on at Sant’ Antnin recycling plant.’
The size considerations Mr Cutajar refers to were publicised in the Project Description Statement of May 2003. Based on the comments received from stakeholders, including local councils, MEPA formulated the Terms of Reference for the Environmental Statement that had to follow. WasteServ is strictly adhering to this process, which is itself regulated by law.
The assumption that the Alternative Site Assessment is flawed due to size discrepancies is incorrect. The sites were disqualified on various counts including ecology, access, visual impact and agriculture. The fact that the sites should have been bigger would have rendered them even less suitable for such a development due to the increased impacts.
