Work Underway in 30 schools

Malta Independent Thursday, 4 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The reorganisation of Maltese schools into colleges will increase the work of the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools, said Education Minister Louis Galea yesterday.

Dr Galea said that for colleges to fulfill their goals, a number of new schools and lyceums were needed. Moreover, the aesthetics and facilities of all primary and secondary schools needed to be upgraded as both factors have an effect on the quality of education.

Dr Galea made these comments during a visit to the San Bastjan primary school in Qormi yesterday. He said that this school was one of 30 where work was being carried out this summer, including projects such as installing new ceilings, extensions, maintenance and modernisation.

He said that works at the school in Qormi were now into their second phase and that six ceilings had been replaced, new windows were installed and a new electrical system had also been installed.

Dr Galea said that two shafts were being excavated to make room for lifts. He also made reference to work being carried out at a school in Siggiewi where the whole ceiling was removed and replaced, after which an additional storey was added to the building.

He said that a multi-purpose room was also being constructed in this school. In Zejtun, he said, work was underway to replace sanitary facilities and purposely build facilities for disabled children.

Dr Galea said the government was giving a vision of what education should be in Malta and said education, as confirmed by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi last Saturday, will be one of the top incentives to encourage investment in Malta.
