How To achieve your vision in sport

Malta Independent Tuesday, 9 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Being the son of two Malta tennis champions, I was introduced to the sport of tennis at a very young age.

Through their vision and belief in my capabilities they have guided and supported me to reach where I have reached today.

Since my parents both became coaches after their careers, I spent a lot of time with my parents at the tennis club and under the guidance of my father who coached me at his own tennis school. As they say, to make it at the top level you have to have a good vision of what you want to achieve and to take what you are doing seriously.

This means dedicated training which I have been doing from when I started at the age of five and won my first tournament under 10 at the age of seven. Tasting success gives you the encouragement to continue and to aspire higher and your vision continuously evolves as you grow and learn and encounter new experiences and challenges.

At the age of nine I started competing in my first international tournaments and to develop my tennis skills and improve I had to become a frequent traveller; this not only helped me in tennis but gave me the opportunity of visiting new places and meeting new people. Every trip you learn something new and gain new experiences and friendships.

Obviously to any young player the dream is to try and reach the top. My goal and vision in tennis is to try and make it as high up as possible in the world rankings. To achieve this one has to put a lot of hours into training and this also means a lot of sacrifices.

After spending a lot of time on the court or on the athletics track training, one has to realise that there is no guarantee that one can make it – but you keep trying!

In any case there is always satisfaction of having seen and visited many countries that if it wasn’t for sports one would not have visited. It is also a nice thing to be popular in your own country although it is a small island and the biggest satisfaction is that people notice the great effort that one has put into it.
