No Pain, no gain

Malta Independent Tuesday, 9 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

My favourite sport is track events in athletics where I have been training the sprints (100m/200m and relays) for the last two and a half years. With the support of my fellow sprinters, my family and the vision of my coach, in this short time, I have managed to slowly make my mark on the local scene. In the past two years I have also gone abroad regularly to take part in International Games including the recent Games of the Small States of Europe in Andorra; forming part of the relay teams in the 100m and 400m where we won silver and broke a national record in the 400m. My most recent success was when I took part in the Youth Championships in Morocco. Here I made a national record in the 100m. I did it in 12.11 seconds, which is also my personal best. Previously it was 12.31. I was very pleased.

That day I learned that to do personal bests and to reach my vision, an athlete must go abroad continuously to take part in competitions to improve, as the level of competition is very challenging.

My vision is to keep on going abroad to broaden my experience in athletics and hopefully to keep on breaking my own records. I also hope that I will go under 12 seconds, because no woman in Malta has gone under 12 seconds. To reach this vision I have to train, train and train; making a lot of personal sacrifices along the way to keep breaking records and making it under the 12 second barrier.

My goal, my dream, my objective and vision is to work hard to make it to the Olympics, and to represent Malta in these games. It would be a very great honour! I also would like other competitors from Malta to take part with me also, maybe in the relay. Relays are very good for team work.

My vision is that in a few years time I will participate in more International Games and make a good name for myself, but the most important thing is to represent Malta and make a good name for my country.

Some athletes have already done this; they have been my role models and have inspired me to be like them, like I hope to inspire others after me. These wishes – my vision - will work only, if I work hard and do my best! As the saying goes, ‘No pain no gain’.

Considerable progress has been recorded

Joseph Cassar

MOC Secretary General

Considerable progress has been recorded in Maltese Sport during these last few years, and I am honoured to say that much of this progress has been registered thanks to the hard work and forward vision of the Malta Olympic Committee.

Vision is important because through it one builds a mission. I dare say that most of what has been achieved in all walks of life, started with some people having visions.

There is still much more that we should in achieve in Malta, and I know it is possible. Nothing is impossible.

My vision is that more and more parents understand the values and benefits that they and their children can reap through sport, and that an active life will become a normal way of life.

My vision is for all teachers in all schools to follow a quality daily physical education programme where all the children take an active part. Schools will have enough equipment for each child to be active for the maximum time during the lessons and not to have to wait for his turn to touch a ball. Schools will have adequate and safe facilities which will be available freely and managed professionally after school hours for the benefit of all members of society.

My vision is to see sports programmes that allow athletes to train full time.

My vision is for Malta to be proud of its athletes and fully supports them in their endeavours.

My vision is to see our athletes progressing to world stage level following the footsteps of the likes of William Chetcuti.

My vision is that students are offered a good balance between their studies and sport. A school for young talented athletes will eliminate the problem most young athletes’ face – to train or to study.

My vision is that during local competitions the sports venues are full of supporters.

My vision is that the local media will help promote athletes and show the local community what it means to be an athlete, highlighting the dedication, the sacrifices and the joy.

My vision is to see local companies investing in our athletes and proud to be their supporters, thus giving back to society a little of what they make from society.

My vision is to see all the sports associations having enough money and state of the art sports facilities, offering our youth alternative and healthy use of their leisure time.
