On their last day of their visit in Sydney, the Malta Labour Party delegation was specially invited on a radio programme in Maltese on SBS. The programme was presented by Antoine Said Pullicino.

During the programme MLP leader Alfred Sant spoke of areas that are suited to the Maltese community in Australia.

Dr Sant also answered questions posed to him and highlighted the need to strengthen the bond amongst the Maltese people, wherever they may be geographically.

He added that the Maltese community must adapt to the times.

Deputy leader Michael Falzon accompanied Dr Sant and the two visited St Dominic’s village in Blacktown, Sydney. This is a project run by the Dominican nuns and consists of a residential home for the elderly. Currently, around 50 people live at this home, 35 of whom are Maltese.

The MLP delegation also paid a visit to La Valletta Social Centre, also in Blacktown. The two party members were given a warm welcome by around 300 Maltese people. Gejtu Pace, president of the centre, expressed his gratitude that Dr Sant has visited the centre for the third time.

Charles Muscat, the MLP representative in Australia thanked Dr Sant and Dr Falzon for accepting the Maltese community’s invitation to visit Australia. He also showed his appreciation for those who helped make the visit a success.

Dr Falzon explained that although he and Dr Sant were treated as honourable guests, it is the people themselves that should be admired for the success they have achieved in forging a new life for themselves. He was pleased to see that the Maltese in Australia had not abandoned their roots.

In his speech, the MLP leader also expressed his satisfaction at witnessing the success Maltese people have reaped and spoke of the importance of unity between the Maltese community in all parts of the world. “Although the Maltese branch out to different places, they all share the same roots,” said Dr Sant.

The MLP delegation left Sydney to begin its visit in Melbourne.
