A Right circus

Malta Independent Monday, 15 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The residents of Dingli Circus have been given the shock of their lives because some bright spark in the ADT decided to take off no less than 12 valuable parking bays from this area.

I have been living in Dingli Circus for over 40 years and I have never seen or heard of a traffic accident or a traffic jam caused by parked cars in this vicinity.

Why pick on Dingli Street when it is a well-known fact that this is the widest street in Sliema and Dingli Circus even much wider? None the less this neighbourhood seems to be the favourite hunting grounds of traffic wardens who swarm around here like bees, maybe it is because the people around here are not the type who verbally abuse or physically threaten them.

Living in Sliema has become a nightmare – we have become prisoners in our own houses since we dare not go anywhere by car out of fear of not finding a parking space on returning, nor for the same reasons can we have friends and relatives visiting us. There have been occasions where I had to park over one mile away from my residence come rain or shine.

For years residents of Sliema have been promised a residential parking scheme but alas the Sliema local council is only notorious for making promises and not keeping them.

Parking is a problem all over Malta. The government, the ADT as well as the local councils should seriously try to find a solution to this problem, and try to alleviate the suffering of the people who voted for them. Removing priceless parking bays is definitely not the answer
