The Unsaid At University

Malta Independent Monday, 22 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The fifth open-air Evenings on Campus film, The Unsaid, is produced by and stars Andy Garcia in what many have called his best and most heartfelt performance. Vincent Kartheiser, in his first major performance, stars as the young patient, and has been singled out by many for special praise.

The film rests on these two memorable performances, as well as the able supporting cast – they bring an honesty and an emotional power to the film which elevates it above the ranks of the usual psychological thriller. The film, rated 18, is being screened tomorrow on campus by the Koperattiva Kulturali Universitarja in collaboration with the Malta University Film Club, with the co-ordination of Dr Salvu Catania and KPMG. Psychologist Mary Ann Borg Cunen will open a discussion after the film.

The 2001 film The Unsaid tells the story of a psychiatrist, who is himself haunted by his son’s suicide and the disintegration of his family, who uncovers the dark past of a troubled adolescent patient. Dr Michael Hunter’s life has started to fall apart after his son’s tragedy – he is divorced from his wife and his relationship with his daughter is deteriorating.

When he is assigned to the case of Tommy – an adolescent who is being reviewed before his release from an institution in a few weeks’ time – there seems nothing exceptional about the case, but as Dr Hunter starts to delve into Tommy’s past he begins to realise that not all is as it seems.

What begins as a drama starts to develop into a psychological thriller as more and more details are revealed about the patient’s past and his motives, and it becomes increasingly obvious that there is more going on beneath his surface than was evident at first.

Cushions are also available for more comfortable seating and refreshments, including traditional Maltese bread, is served during the interval but also during the film by Meet ‘n Eat.
