Bowling: Aercomms, Fina Excel slug it out in 4-all cliffhanger

In week seven of the MTBA National League being played at the Eden SuperBowl, the undisputed match of the week was the fantastic encounter between Aercomms and Fina Excel, which actually ended in a draw with a nail-biting finale. The match between defending champions Aercomms and Fina Excel was a firecracker from the opening shot to the very last, and at the end of the confrontation, the equal share of the points was surely the fairest possible result.

Game one was an absolute stunner, the points going to Aercomms with a massive 882-850 score line, including a 269 from Arcomms’ Paul Baldacchino and a 257 from team mate Ray Falzon Reale. Excel had no reason to be discouraged, and were quick to draw level with an 804-819 equaliser in game two, making sure it was neck-a-neck going into game three.

Both sides kept up the blistering scoring pace established over the preceding games, and the match reached fever pitch in the very last frame which saw Fina Excel clinch it by a solitary pin, 789-790, and so claim the draw. Paul Baldacchino (Aercomms), 694-bowler of the week. Brian Farrugia (Fina Excel), 647.

Fina First saw off closest challengers Ramis with an 8-0 victory, thus extending their Div I lead to 8 points and sending Ramis down to third place, replaced by Aercomms in second. The first game in this match was also a big one, Fina clinching it 837-824. Game two wasn’t so tight, finishing 780-705, before the 100% victory was confirmed with the 730-723 result in game three. Dennis Mercieca (Fina First), 613. John Balani (Ramis), 557.

Globalair Travel picked up eight easy points this week against O’Caseys whose nosedive to relegation continues. They could have reckoned in the scoring in game one which Globalair only clinched by 21 pins (736-715), but the gap opened up n the second which ended 717-639 before whitewash was completed in game three, which turned out to be the winners’ best game of the set ending 796-672. Simon Burke (Globalair Travel), 572. Nikolai Borg (O’Caseys). 523.

Fireballs (11th) were unlucky yet again not to earn a share of the points against Storm II (8th) in week 7, the clash ending 0-8 in favour of the latter. Fireballs weren’t too far off the mark in the opening game which they lost 711-734, and then missed out by 13pins in the second which finished 672-685. Storm II improved to win game three 685-807 to make sure of the full point win. Paul Gray (Storm II), 566. Keith Bugeja (Fireballs), 539.

Sammy’s Embroideries (10th) got the better of Right Deal (9th) in a 6-2 result in the final match of the week. They opened the scoring with a 745-702 victory in game one, but that was cancelled out by a 787-817 equaliser for Right Deal in the second game.

Only 13pins between the two sides going into the deciding game so the match was still anyone’s for the taking.
