Edward DeBono Foundation Thinking corner: Sportsmanship

Malta Independent Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

What makes you a good athlete?

Is it just your strength and ability to win?

Does your behaviour come into it?

Does your character play a part in how good a sports person you are?

Let’s use do some thinking on Sportsmanship.

Name of the thinking tool for this week:

Other People’s Views (OPV)

What is an OPV?

Many situations involve other people besides us. What these people think is as important as what we think before we make a decision. They may see things very differently from us and not be wrong!

Why use OPV?

We use the OPV to try and put ourselves in other people’s shoes and try to imagine what they think about a situation.

Have you ever grumbled when your parents say NO to something you wish? Have you every tried to understand why they said NO?

Using the OPV is very easy. There are two steps to follow:

Make a list of the people involved in the situation.

Imagine what they would think or say about this situation.

Let’s work an example together

You are taking part in a tournament and want to win at all costs so you decide to play rough! Let’s do some thinking using OPV to see what other people will say and how they will feel about this.

Step 1. Who’s involved? (Make a list)

Other children in your team,

Children playing against you,

Coach,

Parents of other children.

Step 2. What do they think about this decision?

Other children in your team. – They may think:

Look he wants to impress to become captain,

He’s always playing on his own without passing the ball to us!

Playing with this person is not fun
