Malta Independent Wednesday, 31 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

One admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was convicted while the other pleaded not guilty, claiming he had been attacked at his workplace.

Durdu Mehmet, 30 and Mustafa Bulent Kirecci, 26, both from St Paul’s Bay, yesterday were accused of seriously injuring each other during a fight on 26 August at around 10.30pm in their hometown.

Mehmet admitted the charge brought against him and was sentenced to a two-year jail term suspended for four. Kirecci on the other hand pleaded not guilty and his defence attorney Dr Franco Debono claimed his client had acted in self-defence when Mehmet went over to his workplace to attack him.

Presiding magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera granted the man bail against a Lm1,000 guarantee and ordered him to pay a Lm100 deposit.
