Our group, Children’s Rights First, has been campaigning for the past five years for our children's rights to be enforced through legislation.
Our children need a safe and healthy environment when socialising with their peers. Instead, here in Malta, all the rules are broken especially with regard to underage drinking and frequenting places meant for adults. Although on paper we are told that the age limit for drinking is 16, no official body, like the police or local wardens can enforce this law because they are not empowered by law to do so. The bartenders are the ones liable to a fine if caught selling alcohol or cigarettes to those under 16.
How can the bartender police our children? It is not in their interest to do so. Who is going to protect our children from becoming alcoholics? This situation is causing great harm and distress to hundreds of parents who experience first hand these shortcomings on a daily basis. How can we raise responsible children with no support from the authorities?
Articles 30, 31, 32 and 33 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which this government ratified in 1990, state that children have the right to recreation and leisure with the same age group; the right to be protected from economic and all forms of exploitation; and to be protected from the illicit use of narcotics and sexual exploitation.
Safeguarding a healthy and safe environment for our children should be paramount. We must voice our concern and put pressure on the authorities to enact and enforce the much needed legislation.
Legal consumption of alcohol starts at age 18 in the countries of the EU. Why is the government finding it so difficult to follow suit? It is in the best interest of our children to have adequate laws that protect their health from the harmful effects of alcohol and cigarettes.
So, parents, join and voice your concern. We only want the best for our children- they do not deserve to be exploited further!
