The Myth about golf

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Three cheers to Raphael Vassallo for his excellent article last Sunday in which he demolishes the nonsensical myth that the prospective golf course is in our country’s interest (TMIS, 28 August).

He caustically exposes the failure of the government to seriously address the real needs of the majority of the people who have everything to lose and nothing to gain when large swathes of land are given on a platter to entrepreneurs who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

The government is also very ill-advised if it ignores the insatiable, huge demands on Malta’s fast dwindling natural resources… so much for the much vaunted sustainable development.

The promotion of golf in an overpopulated, overdeveloped island, where there is a very serious shortage of water, is outright folly.
