In the last days of July a Contingent made up Athletes coaches and parents left Malta for a training Camp in Slovenia.
The majority of Athletes were of ages 12-15. Accompanying, there were also two senior athletes. Under the guidance and help of coaches Victor Camilleri, Anna Lungaro and Ramon Formosa, the athletes had a week of intensive training at the ZSD Stadion in the capital city Ljubjana. Training sessions were held twice daily.
Apart from the time allotted to training, the contingent had the opportunity to visit some famous and beautiful places such as the Postojna caves, lakes Bled and Bohinj and mount Vogel. All this was possible thanks to the constant help of Mrs. Majda Ezren, who coordinated this trip. So apart from the element of sports, the group benefited from an educational experience.
The collaboration between Athleta Pembroke and The Olimpja club of Ljubjana has been going on for the past six years.
With the help of Slovenian Athletics guru, Edward Sega, young and talented athletes got the opportunity to experience training and competing abroad.
The long awaited day of the Mednarodni Atleski Miting arrived and our athletes were all prepared to compete and keep Malta’s name high. Pembroke athletes competed against people much older. Some of the foreign athletes had already obtained semi professional status within their clubs.
The 15 Maltese athletes put on a very good show.
All of them improved their personal bests.
This performance was so impressive that local and foreign journalists gave words of praise for our youngsters.
A memorable experience for the girls who took part in the 300m race as they had the opportunity to test their ability against Mexican Star Ana Guevara who a week later landed a bronze medal for Mexico in the 400m race at the Helsinki Iaaf Athletics World Championships.
