Croatia Press reacts angrily to 1-1 draw with Malta at Ta’ Qali

Croatia’s soccer fans were reeling yesterday after a surprise 1-1 draw with Malta that knocked it from the top of their World Cup qualifying group and dented their chances of qualifying for next year’s tournament.

Newspapers and other media were full of scathing criticism.

“Disgrace” was the headline on the front of daily Sportske Novosti, while “Debacle in Malta” and “Shock and Horror” were among others.

Following Wednesday’s match, Sweden beat Hungary to go top of Group 8 with 21 points, one more than Croatia.

Third-place Hungary cannot qualify after their loss, while Malta was already out of contention and remained last.

While most Croatian players conceded that the result was disappointing and a blow to the team’s efforts to as group winner, coach Zlatko Kranjcar refused to dwell on the game.

“Despite everything, this doesn’t change a single thing,” Kranjcar said. “We are still in a solid position to advance to the World Cup.”

Croatia, who are seeking their third straight appearance at the World Cups, host Sweden on 8 October in what will likely be the group decider.

Croatia, which only won independence in 1991, then takes on Hungary in Budapest, while Sweden welcomes Iceland.

“There is no need to despair and criticise,” Kranjcar said. “After all, we always knew from the start that it would come down to the match against Sweden to see who gets first place.”
