Malta Independent Sunday, 11 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Housing Authority notifies that the details of those who applied for the Shared Ownership Scheme, for which there was a heavy demand, have been published. Under this new scheme, applicants who cannot afford to buy the whole equity have the option to buy one third or two thirds of the equity.

A total of 646 valid applications were submitted for 132 units. The largest number of applicants was made up of engaged couples (382 valid applications) – 59 per cent of all valid applications. This was followed by families with children (205 valid applications) – 32 per cent of all valid applications submitted. The Housing Authority also received 59 valid applications (nine per cent) from single persons. This category includes single people over 30, people with a disability who are over 18, or those leaving an institution.

Commenting on the response Housing Authority chairman Marisa Micallef said, “Shared ownership helps people to own part of their property if they cannot afford to buy it all at once. It also encourages people not to borrow too much. We hope that we can increase our output so that more people can become beneficiaries in the coming years.”

Details of the applicants have now been published and the lists can be viewed at Habitat Hall, Binja Filippo Sciberras, Filippo Sciberras Square, Floriana, and 25, Enrico Mizzi Street, Victoria, Gozo, between 8.30am and 12.30pm until Wednesday 14 September 2005. Those who do not agree with the details shown can object within seven working days as from 5 September 2005.
