Mr C. Camilleri puts forward a really stupid argument in his letter (TMIS, 4 September). Malta was one of the signatories to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights at the end of World War II.
Giving refuge to asylum seekers has nothing whatever to do with individual families offering refuge to individual asylum seekers in their own homes (ie charity), but it is about a whole society (through its democratically elected government) fulfilling its obligation under Clause 14 of that universal declaration (ie justice).
