Malta Independent Sunday, 11 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Go mobile has signed a sponsorship agreement with William Chetcuti, Malta's foremost individual sportsman. The sponsorship contract will cover a period till 2008, the year that will see Chetcuti represent Malta in the Beijing Olympic Games.

Speaking about this sponsorship, go mobile Marketing Executive Albert Gouder said the company is proud and honoured to support Malta's leading professional shooter: "William Chetcuti has made Malta proud locally and internationally. go mobile will be supporting him and his coaching team for a number of years with a view to increasing his successes, especially on the international front.

"For the past five years, go mobile has supported various sporting disciplines and athletes. The sponsorship of William Chetcuti is the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at supporting local sport," Mr Gouder said.

20-year old Chetcuti thanked go mobile for its support and added that with the company's assistance he aims to compete in high-level shooting events, with the aim of bringing more medals to Malta. Next November, Chetcuti will participate in the shooting world cup to be held in Dubai.

Recently, he placed second in the ISSF world cup held in Belgrade. This made him the second best double trap shooter in the world with only Mohammed Al-Maktum, Olympic gold medallist, beating him so far.

William's shooting talent was discovered at an early stage by the Malta Shooting Federation, which embarked him on an intensive training programme. In 2001, he made his debut overseas at the Small Nations Games in San Marino where he won his first silver medal in seniors for Malta. In September of the same year William won his first seniors' gold medal, during the Mediterranean Shooting Championships organised in Malta.

In 2002 he participated in the Commonwealth Games at Bisley, UK. He surprised most of the participants by finishing on the podium with a bronze medal. Since then he never looked back and went on winning medals in the European Championships held in Lonato, Italy and in Byrno, Czech Republic. In 2003, it was Malta's turn to organise the Small Nations Games, and William won the gold medal in front of his home supporters.

In August 2004, it was William's turn to represent Malta in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. This must have been the most prestigious event so far for William. Out of all the nations taking part, William made all Maltese proud by ending in a shoot off for the sixth place and finishing in the ninth position overall. This was a remarkable position for such a young shooter in the Olympics.

This year William won another gold medal in the World Junior Championships held in Germany. In June, he represented Malta during the 2005 GSSE in Andorra and, apart from being the flag bearer, he showed all those present that he was in a class of his own by winning the gold medal in the seniors.

A few weeks later the Malta Olympic Committee chose him again for the Almeria 2005 Mediterranean Games where he kept his position by winning the bronze medal in the seniors.
