I refer to the “we cannot” litany of Ms Caruana Galizia and Mr Raphael Vassallo’s articles (11 September). What we surely cannot do is let the influx of illegal immigrants, refugees or whatever persist forever. Is it that hard to understand that, regardless of what was signed some half-a-century ago, ultimately there is a limit to everything?
If the government does not want to miserably fail our society, and in view of present international indifference, unilateral action not in line with any recommendations or obligations is inevitable.
Part of the task of a government, in a local context, is to modify laws that have become unfair to one party. This principle should also apply to the international context. However, if everyone fails to notice our dire and unsustainable situation, then there are not many options open to any government other than to defend our rights, for which it is ultimately responsible. They will listen then.
