Flexible Traffic enforcement

Malta Independent Friday, 23 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Gatsometer’s successful partnerships with their agents have resulted in the development of many innovative products, not least of which is the versatile digital Multi-Camera System (MCS). The flexibility of the MCS makes it equally suitable for use at signalled intersections for red light enforcement or for the simultaneous monitoring of red light and speed offences, as well as railway crossings and tunnels or for speed enforcement on motorways.

This advanced and flexible system may be both gantry-mounted or installed at the roadside and uses a combination of digital cameras to capture violations over up to four lanes of traffic, with digital colour images and optional video event recording if required. Camera combinations include:

• One camera for each lane

• One camera for two lanes

• Overview camera

• Digital video event recorder

• White or infrared flash

Multiple MCS systems can be used in combination if required. Gatsometer camera housings are available with one, two, four and six ports to enable the most flexible configuration of lane cameras, overview camera, flash and digital video recorder.

Gatso’s MCS system uses 12-bit digital cameras specially developed for traffic enforcement applications with combined lane-specific overview images. Its interval time of 0.2 seconds, together with high resolution images, makes it ideal for a multi-camera system, offering more flexibility in implementation than a single higher resolution camera in a fixed installation. The image resolution is particularly suitable for automatic number plate recognition purposes.

• Flexible traffic enforcement with Gatso’s MCS

• Multi Camera System Front-Rear (MCS-FR)

The unique versatility of the Gatso MCS system enables it to be used in applications where front images, rear images or both front and rear offence images are required.

For applications where both front and rear images are required, two MCS-FR systems may be used, for example at a signalled intersection, one at the stop line and a second system across the intersection. When the first camera is triggered by an offending vehicle, it records an image of the rear of the car, complete with licence plate. The second system is immediately triggered to capture an image of the front of the vehicle, with the driver’s face. The digital colour overview camera, which covers up to four lanes, simultaneously records two

additional overview images. The optional digital video camera installed in each camera head makes an event recording of the offence, which is stored on the hard disc together with the digital images.

The MCS-FR is triggered by Gatso’s highly reliable GLD4-2S loop detection system, or their latest Non-Invasive Detection (NID) system. Up to 60,000 offence images, including digital video may be stored on the hard disc. Offence data is encrypted to ensure it is tamper-proof and can be viewed or downloaded to a computer using Gatsometer software via suitable communications media.

Gatsometer managing director Timo Gatsonides says: “The MCS-FR is an exciting result of Gatsometer’s policy of working in collaboration with our partners that enables us to develop

customer-oriented products and systems, tailored to the client’s needs. The MCS-FR is so flexible that it can be easily modified to suit local requirements.”
