Reading Alex Mangion’s letter last Sunday makes one think. The gentleman claims that Edward Fenech, AD's spokesperson on the economy, made “back of the envelope” calculations on the economics of golf, in his contribution of entitled “Golf or bust!” (TMIS, 25 September).

Personally I found Mr Fenech's calculations quite straightforward and full of common sense. Nobody has as yet disproved his calculations. What is surprising is that so far nobody advocating the golf course has bothered to produce any economic analysis of having three golf courses.

If Mr Mangion considers AD's calculations as “back of the envelope”, then what does he term the Prime Minister's magical mystery figure of 30,000 tourists?
