As all local music lovers leafed through the papers, or heard the news, the shock we had been awaiting for some time finally dawned upon us. James Grech is no more, having departed this life at the young age of 28. We knew that his illness was terminal and that he had been in Australia close to his family to die peace-fully, but when the reality hit us, it was no less shocking.
I knew James quite well, having been a friend for the past eight years or so. A shy, introverted but kind person, he was full of musical gifts and his violin playing enriched many a concert and recital at all the major musical venues in Malta. I clearly remember his distinct style, which had a laid back approach as central to music-making but was always deeply committed and passionate and ever faithful to the musical score.
James loved music for music’s sake. It was a crucial, if not an essential, part of his life that was beginning to reach new highs of late, especially with the excellent concerts he used to organise that brought a number of established artists to our shores. It is indeed cruel for the local musical scene that he was taken away so early, but one must say that God knows best.
Although we had our differences on some issues, especially on the role of critics, I always found help and support from James. I am seeing him now, playing his violin up there in the skies with the music of Bruch, Mendelssohn, Mozart and a host of other composers.
My sincere condolences go to all James’ family, friends and associates who were enriched by having this person in their lives for all too short a time.
