Reference is here made to the part of Alfred Mifsud’s weekly contribution entitled Friday Wisdom: Infinite (TMID, 14 October) in which reference is made to the UHM. Mr Mifsud claims that the UHM is more comfortable working with the Nationalist government. This is absolutely and categorically not true.
Mr Mifsud surely recalls the various statements issued by the UHM and the number of industrial actions which were deemed necessary to safeguard workers’ interests under the present Nationalist administration. As he rightly wrote, history cannot be changed. And indeed, the independence of the UHM from the Nationalist Party, and from any other party in our political
spectrum, has been cast in iron in Maltese history.
Much as the UHM does, and may be labelled to, favour the Nationalist Party, the undeniable truth is that only a strong and independent union such as the UHM serves the purpose for which it was founded in 1966, that is, to uphold the principles of solidarity and workers’ rights.
Perceptions may very well lead to
assumptions.
