Stop Those vandals

Malta Independent Saturday, 22 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Portes des Bombes in Floriana has once again been the target of vandals. If I am not mistaken, it was the second time that the monument was vandalised this year. There was another time when the bastions next to it were also damaged by people who wrote graffiti on them.

While the police should leave no stone unturned to catch the perpetrators, I agree with The Malta Independent’s call (20 October) on the authorities concerned to take more care of the national heritage. It is impossible to place policemen on every such site.

On the other hand, the government and local councils should consider the installation of cameras that monitor historic monuments 24 hours a day. It would then be much easier to catch any would-be vandals, who might also be put off from damaging such monuments knowing that the risk of getting caught is greater.

I think that we should go a step further by having such cameras installed close to all these precious monuments that Malta is so proud of. We cannot afford to have them damaged.
