Pedestrian-friendly

Malta Independent Monday, 24 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

I refer to the report (TMID, 15 October) about the idea to convert Bisazza Street in Sliema into a pedestrian zone.

This issue had already been brought up in the past and there were mixed feelings about it. Some people believed it was a good idea to have the centre of Sliema as a car-free zone, while others thought that this would create more problems rather than resolve them.

I think that it is a good idea to have Bisazza Street turned into a pedestrian zone.

It would be very much like Republic Street in Valletta and other areas in major cities abroad. It would enable people to shop freely without having to worry about traffic.

I must however point out that the Sliema car park must remain accessible to the public. It is already extremely hard to find parking space in Sliema, and very often the car park is the only solution.

I hope that the Urban Development and Roads Ministry will plan this out carefully.
