The Fate of Xlendi Tower

Malta Independent Thursday, 3 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

I would like to show my concern regarding the disastrous state in which the tower in Xlendi Gozo is at the present moment.

The photo I am sending shows the crumbling walls in the part of the tower that overlooks the sea. Should we allow such beauties to collapse without doing anything to preserve them? Aren’t we able to restore what our ancestors passed on to us so that we can pass it on to our future generations?

I hope that through this letter something will be done urgently before further damage takes place.

Since I am writing about this matter, I would like to comment about the state in which the fortifications of Cittadella are at the moment. The walls of Cittadella are full of shrubs and tress, which apart from hindering the beauty of these fortifications they also damage the walls due to the roots of the trees. Moreover, the lighting system around these walls lacks to show the utmost beauty of this Gozitan jewel. Driving at night from Marsalforn to Rabat, one can hardly see Cittadella since it is not lit appropriately. It would be a better attraction for tourists if it is lit appropriately and if restorations are carried at a faster rate to prevent further damage to these fortifications.
