I would like to clarify some points regarding the letter written by the former mayor of Zebbug Dr Paula Sciriha (TMID, 31 October)

WasteServ has taken the necessary steps to ensure that the bring-in site is kept as clean as possible. Before the installation of the security camera, this site experienced a series of misuses with un-recyclable waste being thrown randomly around the bins, to the detriment of the neighbours and residents who made proper use of this site. It should be noted that despite these abuses, many residents carried on making good use of the site disposing of clean recyclable waste. This is why WasteServ never agreed to the removal of the bins but instead chose to increase its capital expenditure and install a CCTV camera.

We cannot say that the camera did not achieve good results. And although there was a substantial amount of waste during the weekend of 8 and 9 October, much of it was placed there by a single person, as can clearly be seen on the on-site camera film. We also have to point out that after having the site cleaned on Monday morning, the environs were kept tidy throughout the rest of the week. It is precisely because of this that WasteServ cannot understand why it received an ultimatum for the removal of the bring-in site by 15 October and why the council did not reconsider its decision.

We were further surprised when in the evening of Friday, 14 October, the council sent an e-mail informing WasteServ that the bring-in site was being removed that same evening due to the amount of waste around the site. The on-site camera’s film shows clearly that the site was clean throughout the whole week.
