Traffic Light rethink

Malta Independent Tuesday, 8 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

There is no doubt that the new roundabout at the end of the road that now links the top of Telgha t’Alla u Ommu to the Naxxar-San Gwan road has successfully dealt with the tailback of traffic that had previously occurred on both roads. However, I have noticed with considerable alarm the several sets of as yet non-functioning traffic lights (I believe there are three of them) on the link road. The first one is halfway up the fairly steep hill at the beginning of the road going towards Naxxar. As a motorist who uses the road regularly, and is frequently reduced to crawling along in first gear – even having to slip the clutch sometimes in order to avoid stalling the engine – behind what to my mind is a grossly overladen truck, I shudder to think what it will be like when one of these monsters has to actually stop completely!

I urge the planners to think again. I am all for giving pedestrians a safe place in which to cross a road – but please, do not have traffic-lights at this particular spot. If they are actually needed at all – which is questionable – can they not be moved maybe 15 or 20 metres further up the hill?
