MOC Medical Commission Seminar: The role of sports science in young athletes, coaches

The role of the Medical Commission of the Malta Olympic Committee is to advise on all matters related with sports science including providing advice on training programmes from the scientific point of view to athletes and their coaches; to study the problem of drug abuse in sport and relative detection and to organise courses in sports science and to develop the study of sports at all levels including university and postgraduates levels amongst other medical sports science related matters.

With this objective in mind the MOC Medical Commission, in collaboration with the Olympic Solidarity, are organising once again a medical seminar this time on the topic ‘The role of sports science in young athletes’. This seminar will take place over three days from18 to 20 November at the Dolmen Resort Hotel, Bugibba.

Topics that will be covered include the problem of obesity in Malta, the role of nutritional supplements in young athletes, acute sport injuries in children, physiotherapeutic modalities in children, chronic sport injuries in children, medical problems in young female athletes. Speakers will include a number of local and foreign guests who will include: Prof. Arrigo Giombini, Institute of Sport Medicine – CONI (Italy); Dr. Kirill Micallef Stafrace, member of executive EFSMA, Dr. Lucienne Attard, Dr. John Buhagiar, Mr. Ivan Riolo (IPES), Mr. Milos Stanisavljevic (Physiotherapist S.E.R.C), Mr. Raymond Bezzina (Physiotherapist Footmania), Adele Muscat (Sports Psychologist); Lucienne Pace and Maria Ellul from the Health Promotion Department.

The purpose of the seminar is to raise the awareness of healthy living and other ways and means of improving ones health in our ever-changing society, especially for children.

Exhibition stands will be open to participants, which will provide information, professional advice and samples; these include Collins Williams (Health and Sport), Starbene Health Shop, Seven Seas, EuroHealthcare, Additiva and Pharmaton/Scudotex.

There is a registration fee of Lm16 (which includes coffee breaks and lunch) for each participant and Lm8 for students (offer valid to maximum of 20 students).
