Men’s Division I MBA Shield: Qormi Made to work harder than expected for their win by SN Suns

Malta Independent Wednesday, 9 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

After an uncertain start Qormi had to work hard for their win, facing a determined Suns side, as both teams were coming from a win, incidentally against the same side, Loyola.

It was Suns who showed the better ideas in the opening session, and ending in front by a mere hoop.

In the second quarter Suns still managed to hold on to their lead, aided by a couple of treys but as the session drew to a close Qormi at last started to find their touch, and a 6-0 run pushed them into a mere 25-24 low score lead at the interval.

After the break both sides seemed to take a breather, and the scoring fell away. Despite this, Qormi always managed to preserve their small lead and after three sessions it was a 34-32 match.

The last session, at least, opened up in play and Qormi made sure as Suns inexplicably started shooting on sight, and failing miserably. Qormi remained calm and operated on fast breaks which demoralised Suns, who had no reply till the end. Qormi now meet Mellieha in the second semi final on Saturday.

Qormi: 16 Keith Scicluna, 11 Antonia Grech, 11 Adrian Baldacchino.

Suns: 10 Roberto Formosa, 10 Mark Schembri.

Referees: Emmanuel Mangani, Jean Paul Sammut

Floriana 56

Mosta 85

(15-24)(5-20)(13-21)(23-20)

Mosta won their group with this second win, and now meet Suns in the first semi final, next Friday. It was a handsome win over Floriana, but the Greens made a marked improvement from their defeat by Mellieha.

In fact, Floriana had a good start to the match, keeping pace with their opponents, till Mosta made a good ending, to lead 24-15. Mosta then went all out in the second session, as Steve Gouder and Ray Muscat obtained points at will, and Floriana fell away till the half time buzzer. Score at 44-20.

After the break Floriana picked up once more but Mosta were in full swing, and a 14-2 run midway through the session opened up their lead further.

The last quarter was of a more open nature and both sides obtained treys, as Floriana took the opportunity to hike up a more than respectable score, and Mosta were quite happy with their big lead. The champions look to have increased their potential but will face tangible opponents later on.

Floriana: 14 Anthony Shoults, 13 Gareth Gilson.

Mosta: 28 Steve Gouder, 19 Ray Muscat, 13 Oliver Sammut.

Referees: Carlo Farrugia, Jennifer Mangani.
