Alarm Regarding MCC New Year’s Eve party

Malta Independent Sunday, 13 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From K. Farrugia

I own a place in Valletta for which I had paid quite a substantial sum of money.

It has come to my attention that a New Year’s Eve party for around 6000 young people aged 16-26 years is going to be held at the newly renovated Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC). I am sending a letter to my neighbours and residents close to the said venue so that no police permit is issued.

The organisers have completely ignored the fact that people live next to the MCC. They have also shown disrespect to the Maltese people as the renovation for the CHOGM was carried out by Maltese taxpayers’ money. Thousands of Maltese liri will be paid to destroy it just a month later. Just imagine a minimum of 6000 people spilling an alcoholic drink, 6000 people dropping a plastic cup on the floor, food stuck to the floor, 10 per cent feeling sick on the floor and the walls. Total nuts!!!!!

I still remember a similar party that was held in the venue some seven years ago. It was horrendous, with the unbearable noise lasting till 4am, people shouting in the streets, youngsters lying in the road drunk and sick, ambulances and doctors carrying people to hospital, cars scratched, people throwing up over cars. In short, a terrible nightmare for residents.

I am not against youngsters enjoying themselves but not to the detriment of others. This party can be held in an area that is non-residential.
