Malta Independent Friday, 18 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

St Andrews consolidated their second place in the table after this deserved victory. They were more methodical in their approach than their opponents who showed enthusiasm but were very erratic in their passing and deployment.

The Saints went straight on the offensive and a shot by Michael Amato missed the upright with Qormi keeper Jurgen Cilia beaten.

At the other end Saints’ goalkeeper Alexei Cauchi foiled Rodney Caruana with a timely sortie after a Gary Parnis well taken through pass . St. Andrews again took the initiative. From a Michael Ellul flag kick Michael Debono headed the ball the wrong may but on 12 minutes they drew first blood, from another Ellul flag kick the ball was partially cleared and Amato first timed the rebound home.

Cilia had to dive and save in two attempts a shot by Neil Chetcuti after being served by Amato and in a rare Qormi attack Cauchi foiled Kevin Camilleri with a timely sortie after a Chris Vella through ball and Cilia had to fist the ball away after a Chetcuti cross.

On 28 minutes St. Andrews doubled through Ellul who scored with a rising shot from a free kick from 25 metres.

The Saints resumed their pressure after restart with Qormi trying, with great difficulty, to act on the break.

Cilia saved a header by Simon Psaila after a Michael Calleja through ball and a shot by the same player missed the upright.

From a cross-shot by Chetcuti, Cilia fumbled the ball but a defender cleared to safety, from a Jordan Calleja through ball Cilia saved a header by Psaila to a corner.

After a Qormi rare attack, a flag kick by Rodney Caruana was headed away by a defender.

A minute before normal time St. Andrews scored a third goal with a swift move; Ellul put Michael Calleja through, the latter crossed to Amato who made no mistake from inside the area and just before the final whistle Qormi were reduced to ten men as Kevin Camilleri was shown the red card for retaliating.

Following this result Floriana are on 10 points from 6 games while Mellieha have only 2 points from the same number of games.

Thus Mellieha are in dire need of points, whilst for the Greens it was another positive result, that crowned another good performance.

The northerners created the first occasions. Albert Aquilina put Mario Calleja through but Greens defender Glenn Agius foiled him with a timely clearance and Greens goalkeeper Kyle Gerada saved on Daniel Vella after an Aquilina cross.

Floriana’s reaction was a header by Dylan Balzia, which finished out after a Mark Spiteri flag kick.

On 11 minutes Floriana opened the score; Orianski Buhagiar put Spiteri through, Mellieha ‘keeper Kurt Sammut partially saved his shot and the same player netted from the rebound.

Sammut then saved on Clyde Borg after being served by Buhagiar.

Mark Spiteri had a cross shot cleared after a run down the left flank after dribbling past two opponents.

Sammut neutralised a cross by Agius and Gerada saved a free kick shot by Alistair Attard.

Just before the half time whistle Floriana doubled the score. Spiteri crossed to Balzia who made no mistake from inside the area.

Few where the actions worthy of note after the restart as for most of the time play was restricted to midfield.

After a Spiteri free kick, Sammut saved on Balzia, a free kick shot by Spiteri finished over the bar.

At the other end, Gerada saved a grounder by Aquilina after a Zack Sammut through ball. Sammut saved on Spiteri after a Balzia cross and also saved a free kick shot by Franklin Abela.
