Italy's Milan, Holland's PSV Eindhoven and Glasgow Rangers also went through to the knockout stage last night.

In Group E, Milan and PSV had the last laugh in a tight group after both won their final home matches.

Milan beat Schalke 3-2 thanks to goals from Pirlo and Kaka (2), while the Germans had salvaged some hopes with goals from Poulsen (1-1) and Lincoln (3-2).

The Dutch side got the better of Turkish side Fenerbahce as they romped home to a 2-0 win with a goal in each half.

Cocu headed in Farfan's free kick in the 14th minute, and Farfan added the other in the 85th by flicking the ball into the net.

Rangers held Inter to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox Park and with Artmedia also drawing 0-0 against Porto, the Scottish side managed to go through.

Although Brazilian star Adriano headed Inter in front in the 29th minute, Peter Lovenkrands levelled nine minutes later.

In Group F, Lyon ascertained their top spot after a 2-1 win against Rosenborg.

Karim Benzema scored Lyon's first goal in the 33rd minute but Daniel Braaten equalised for Rosenborg before Fred scored the winner for the French side in injury time.

In the other group match, Real Madrid's negative period continued in Greece yesterday as Olimpiakos came from a goal behind to beat the Madrilenos by two goals to one.

Rivaldo scored an 87th-minute winner for Olympiakos handing new Real Madrid coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro a 2-1 loss in his debut.

Olympiakos played more aggressively in the second half and equalised through Erol Bulut.

In the Group G top match, Liverpool held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw to make sure they win the group.

Both teams had already qualified for the knockout stage, but Liverpool only needed a draw, while Chelsea needed a win.

Frank Lampard had Chelsea's best chances throughout the match, but the Liverpool defence held strong.

Chelsea have not beaten Liverpool in their past four European matches. Two others were 0-0 draws – including at Liverpool in September – while the Reds beat Chelsea 1-0 in April to secure a place in the Champions League final.

In the other group match, Anderlecht obtained a first, though useless, win as they beat Real Betis in Spain thanks to a 44th minute goal from Vincent Kompany.

Betis finished in third place and go through to the UEFA Cup.
