Basketball – Peugeot Women’s League: Depiro Beat Kerygma to remain on top of the table

Malta Independent Wednesday, 14 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Luxol had a canter against bottom-club Suns and scored at will against inferior opponents. They dominated all the four sessions, although they slackened off at the end, enabling Suns to make the last points of the match.

An opening 32-0 run set the seal for the Violets, as Cettina Caruana replied for the Suns.

The second session produced more of the same and another two good runs interspersed with a Melanie Pulis hoop brought a 51-6 score at the interval.

After the break Luxol didn’t let off and an opening 10-0 run and a closing 16-0 effort till the end of the session underlined their dominance.

In the final quarter Luxol still kept piling up the points but then, at the end, they let off and Suns produced a small 6-0 run to make up the final score.

Luxol: 17 Rachel Camilleri, 14 Lara Chetcuti, 14 Krista Micallef.

Suns: 7 Cettina Caruana.

Referees: Alfred Carbonaro, Joe Borg.

Kerygma 38

Depiro Still 61

(7-19)(10-16)(14-14)(7-12)

Depiro kept at the top of the standings again, as they disposed of Kerygma, in a match in which they still left somewhat to be desired after an opening long run in the first session.

A 19-1 run midway through the quarter gave Depiro the lead they sought and then they played just enough to increase their lead slightly till the end of the session as Sarah Pace made her treys. At the interval it was a 35-17 match.

After the break Kerygma came more into the game and slightly decreased their arrears but Depiro produced a spurt at the end, although they were hit by a couple of Kerygma hoops as the third session ended.

In the last quarter Kerygma shared the play with their opponents for most of the time but Depiro had the better ending to the match, and an 8-1 run closed the match.

Kerygma: 14 Agnetha Xuereb, 12 Josette Calleja

Depiro: 10 Dorianne Galea, 10 Sarah Pace

Referees: Stephen Micallef, Jennifer Mangani

Hibs Medsea 75

Naxxar Danone 36

(27-13)(22-8)(12-13)(14-2)

Hibs ended the first round of the Peugeot league with an empathic win over the Naxxar side who promised at the start of the season but fell away against the big guns.

They suffered an opening 17-2 burst by the Paolites, who never looked back. Naxxar shared the play till the rest of the session but the damage had been done.

In the second quarter Hibs again started off with another strong 18-2 run and Naxxar were pole-axed.

Once more play was balanced till the interval, but Hibs held a good 49-21 lead.

After the break it was Naxxar, and Ann Marie Cefai's trey, to put in a good opening but Hibs recovered till the end of the third session and Naxxar’s deficit remained constant, at 34-61.

In the final quarter the Paolites once more had a bright start, and a 12-1 run enhanced their lead. Naxxar’s reply this time was in fits and starts and Hibs kept on occupying the third spot in the table.

Hibs: 23 Beverlee Zammit, 16 Lucienne Bezzina, 15 Alexis Darmanin.

Naxxar: 10 Sandra Schembri Wismayer

Referees: Bernard Vassallo, Alfred Carbonaro.
