The heavy rain-fall that hit the Maltese Islands, especially yesterday morning, once again disrupted the Premier League matches scheduled for yesterday afternoon at the National Stadium Ta’ Qali.
The much awaited match between Birkirkara and champions Sliema Wanderers was thus postponed for another date, yet to be announced.
The other match programmed yesterday was another interesting match between Marsaxlokk and Valletta.
Last Sunday two Premier league matches and two Division One matches were also postponed because of bad weather.
The matches were between Hibernians and Floriana, with Pieta facing Hamrun Spartans in the other match.
These matches will now be played this evening at The Centenary Stadium. Although the weather forecast still predicts rainy periods, this evening’s matches should not be at risk.
So Hibernians will have another golden opportunity to take sole leadership for the first time this season.
A win against Floriana in the second match this evening will put Robert Gatt’s team in top spot with a two-point lead over Sliema Wanderers.
However for the Paolites it is not going to be an easy task against the in-form Floriana side. The Greens are fresh from two consecutive victories in the league against Pieta and neighbours and rivals Valletta, apart from a win against Tarxien in the FA Trophy.
In the other match Hamrun and Pieta will be fighting for vital points in their quest to avoid the relegation pool.
The Spartans will go all out to cancel the humiliating defeat suffered against the Hotspurs in the firts round. A keenly contested match is anticipated this evening.
Meanwhile, no date has yet been fixed for yesterday’s two postponed matches. The match between Birkirkara and Sliema will in all probability, still be played at The National Stadium, making it more difficult to find an appropriate date to recover this match.
