“Malta has the lowest rate of road deaths per million inhabitants,” was the first sentence in a report. (TMID, 5 January).

While such a statistic is welcome, I believe that a stronger effort needs to be made to make our roads safer.

The government and local councils have embarked on a long campaign to make our roads better and safer. I understand that this takes time and that it costs a lot of money.

But no stone should be left unturned to improve the situation.

It is a known fact that there are too many cars in relation to the size of the country. This is mostly due to the fact that our public transport system is not as efficient as it should be, in spite of efforts that have been made and are still being made.

Campaigns such as the one held on “Car Free Day”, to encourage people to pool in should not be a one-off affair, but should be done more regularly. It is only by reducing the number of vehicles on the road that road accidents could diminish.
