Association News: Archery in Malta

Malta Independent Thursday, 12 January 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

One of the longest established sporting associations in Malta is undoubtedly the Archery Association of Malta. However, despite the fact that the association was set up more than 40 years ago, today it is still a young and dynamic association since it continues to appeal and attract to its fold a good number of members from all age groups.

Archery appeals particularly to those who seek discipline and self-achievement in a sport which can be practiced by archers of all ages and throughout the year.

Over the years, thanks to the continuous efforts made by the association and the ongoing support received from the Malta Olympic Committee, a good number of local archers have also managed to achieve remarkable results in both local as well as international shooting competitions.

Apart from taking part in the indoor and outdoor shooting programme prepared by the association, local archers also have the possibility to participate in various tournaments of international standard both locally as well as abroad.

Of particular note is the bi-annual Archery Games for the Small States of Europe (GSSE) which have been going on since 1996.

The sixth edition of these games is due to be held in May 2006 in Cyprus and in the previous five editions, the Maltese team have returned with a good number of gold, silver and bronze medals for both the Recurve as well as Compound categories.

Another success worthy of note for the local shooters was achieved last October when the team taking part in an international indoor tournament in Germany, won the respective individual categories for the male Compound and female Recurve whilst the Compound team also finished second on the podium.

During the year, apart from the normal shooting programme, the association also organises a number of technical projects and special training courses for its athletes. An introductory programme consisting of a number of practical sessions is also organised throughout the year for beginners who want to have a try at this sport. These sessions are held by experienced and qualified instructors and all the necessary equipment is provided by the association.

The above efforts and results are not only appreciated but also sustained by the Malta Olympic Committee who support the association financially as well as in the form of technical assistance.

The Archery Association of Malta is today proud of being one of the longest standing sporting associations in Malta and satisfied with the results achieved so far by Maltese athletes. Nevertheless, its efforts to promote this sport in Malta are ongoing and still committed and continuously striving to enhance the level of the local archers.
