Handball national team goalkeeper Andrew Mifsud is today starting a seven-day trial with Italian Serie A/Elite leading team Bologna United Handball.
Andrew, 18, plays for La Salle Handball Club and is a nursery product of the same club. He is the first Maltese player to go on trial with a foreign club. This experience was made possible thanks to the contacts of national coach Alan Grima.
Bologna United, coached by Beppe Tedesco, has a number of national team players in their ranks. Marcello Montalto, Matteo Pettinari u Eduardo Arcuri are presently playing for Italy in the group qualifying matches for the 2007 World Cup against Greece, Holland and Bosnia Herzogovina. Ezequiel Pardales, German Pardales, Ljubo Kovacevic and Guillaume Laout are some of the foreign players on the team.
Besides representing Malta in different international competitions both locally and abroad, Andrew Mifsud has also won all the major honours in Maltese handball including the Player of the Year two seasons ago. This trial is hopefully Andrew’s first step towards realising his dream, that of playing handball with a foreign team.
La Salle Handball Club is financially supporting Andrew’s stay in Italy.
