The National Euro Changeover Committee (NECC) has expressed its disagreement with the National Council for the Maltese Language's choice of spelling ewro for the euro.
What one must keep in mind is that the spelling and pronunciation of the European currency has nothing to do with whether or when it becomes our own currency. Essentially, it is already called ewro in Maltese, just as the British pound is lira sterlina and the US dollar is dollaru Amerikan.
Besides, who is NECC to lecture us about how something is written in Maltese when their own website only contains information in English, and even the European Central Bank provides information in Maltese to its visitors.
If this is how much the NECC has our national language to heart, I prefer to leave such things in the hands of those who care.
