Hamrun made a bold move towards a Championship Pool place when they overcame Mosta’s feeble challenge yesterday to register a comfortable win.
These were three very precious points for the Spartans but for Mosta, it was a disastrous result which now sees them virtually certain to be the first team to fill one of the four Relegation Pool spots.
In the first half, Hamrun deserved their two-goal lead as they showed the better ideas with Rupert Mangion dominating the midfield sector.
Mosta attacked more, perhaps, but they rarely troubled goalie Cordina and it was through some set-pieces that they went close to scoring.
In the second half, the match was as good as over a few seconds after the start when the Spartans scored the third goal. Mosta failed to retaliate seriously and with Ivan Zammit in command at the back, the Spartans could coast home comfortably.
After a Digger Okonkwo freekick went just wide, Hamrun opened the scoring on 10 minutes. Ivan Zammit’s freekick was partially cleared and the ball went to veteran Sultana who scored with a hard shot.
On 24 minutes, Okoro was through on his own in the Mosta area, but his shot was cleared by Sciriha on its way to goal.
Mosta replied with harmless lobs from P. Camilleri and D. Falzon. At the other end, on 35 minutes, off a Ryan Fenech low cross, a Sultana shot was blocked to an abortive corner.
On 37 minutes, another Okonkwo freekick again went just wide of the post.
On 39 minutes, Hamrun doubled their lead with an excellent goal. Okoro received a great pass from Sultana and crossed into the Mosta goal where Gaetan Spiteri anticipated Farrugia to flick home from close in.
Soon after the start of the second half, Hamrun ascertained themselves of the points when from a Kevin Borg corner-kick, Ryan Fenech headed home a third goal.
Mosta replied with a Bilocca shot being punched away by Cordina. At the other end, Fenech missed an easy opportunity sending the ball wide with only Farrugia to beat. Soon after, it was Spiteri who again set Fenech, but his shot was saved by Farrugia.
Mosta went close through a Spasic header and a P. Camilleri effort that hit the post.
Three minutes from the end, Cordina denied Mosta a consolation goal, first turning to corner a Falzon shot and then saving Okonkwo’s header.
