Gozo’s Needs

Malta Independent Thursday, 19 January 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

The “Government aims to create new jobs in Gozo” ran a headline in your newspaper (TMID, 16 January).

We have been hearing this for many years now. But the problems in Gozo still remain what they were, and possibly, they have become worse.

Gozo’s specific needs are different from those of Malta, and yet it is increasingly clear that the sister island is not getting the attention that it deserves.

The government should take the bull by the horns and see what Gozo really needs in terms of marketing and better infrastructure. The Maltese still go over quite regularly and it is largely this in-house tourism that keeps Gozo going. Yet, I am afraid that unless Gozo retains its unique characteristics and remains distinct from Malta in all senses, the Maltese would no longer find Gozo as attractive as they are doing now.
