City Gate Project

Malta Independent Friday, 20 January 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

J. Mifsud (A new City Gate TMID, 18 January) does not think he will live long enough to one day see the entrance to City Gate reflect the city “built by gentlemen, for gentlemen”.

It is true that over the past years we have seen and heard about so many ideas as to how the City Gate area, including the bus terminus and the ruins of the old opera house, should be developed.

The problem is that I believe that these were turned down not because of financial reasons, but because of the public debate that ensued. If each and every proposal is shot down just because those who write do not like the idea, then it is true that we will get nowhere because there will always be someone against the proposals made.

I think that the government should make up its mind once and for all, perhaps following a final consultation process, and then move on, closing its ears to what is said after this final decision is taken.

It is only then that we could really say that the City Gate project is underway.
