GWU Statement ‘a bad sign for privatisation process’

Malta Independent Wednesday, 1 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

The statement made by the General Workers’ Union on Monday regarding the Maltacom privatisation process was a bad sign, the Industry, IT and Investment Ministry said yesterday.

“Before anyone has any idea which company will be buying Maltacom, the GWU has come out with an absolutist statement describing what it was not ready to accept.”

The ministry said that Maltacom’s privatisation was an important development for the Maltese economy and it will be a crucial factor to increase Malta’s competitiveness and to create sustainable jobs.

It said that the GWU already had a bitter experience after the Sea Malta case and the ministry said it hoped that this was just a momentary error.

It warned the union to adopt a cautious attitude in the Maltacom case, so that what happened with Sea Malta would not repeat itself.
