The GWU And the UHM

Malta Independent Thursday, 2 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Reading the last three paragraphs of GWU Media & Information Executive Charles Vella’s letter entitled The GWU and the UHM (TMID, 23 January) really shows that the UHM is making headway over the GWU.

Mr Vella said the GWU was the one and only trade union to demand from the government a tax-band revision after the rise in electricity was announced.

What Mr Vella forgot was that the surcharge was already there and the UHM had been asking for this revision for a long time.

He failed to mention that it was the UHM that insisted on instant financial compensation for the rise in the electricity surcharge. This request was accepted by the government and an additional 50 cents increase was granted in the cost of living allowance. The UHM’s responsible attitude is really bearing fruit, in contrast to the GWU.
