After reading the article ‘Paedophile priests are Caesar’s responsibility’ (TMIS, 29 January), I can certainly agree that Malta is too devoted to its religion and so may overlook the horrors that occur in the religious community.

The only thing that puzzles me is the part about the priest from Nadur who allegedly molested a number of children.

The article states that their parents reported the abuses to the archpriest who did not notify the police. It was not his job to notify the police, it was the parents’ job to do so. If my children were molested by anyone I would go straight to the police, not wait for an archpriest to do it for me.

Considering the numerous people who made these accusations, not one of them thought of reporting the abuse to the police. Which brings me to my next line of thought, can we really condemn every priest that is accused of molestation?

Being Maltese I know that this small island is full of deceitful people who will say anything to start a rumour – if you are Maltese you will know what I mean. Is there any evidence that can condemn this priest you talk about, or is it just words uttered by spiteful people who just want to cause trouble for an innocent man?

The reason for his “escape” to America could be quite different than what it might seem now that all this drama has come to light. He might not have run away because he was found out, he might have run away from the cruel accusations because evil people really do exist. I cannot say that he is innocent, but from the evidence that does not seem to exist, I cannot see how he is guilty.

Words come cheap.
