Sponsoring Culture

Malta Independent Wednesday, 8 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Your editorial entitled Cultural talent (TMID, 30 January) dealt with, among other things, attendances in theatres.

I do agree that the big events are always well-attended, and, as you rightly pointed out, there are many people who never go to the theatre or who do so very rarely.

One of the problems could be that the prices for cultural activities are perhaps too much on the high side for people to attend regularly, and therefore people are selective when it comes to the activities they attend.

I understand that the expenses to hold cultural activities are also on the high side, and therefore the organisers need to get their money back. Very often, sponsorships are hard to come by too.

My suggestion is that big companies should invest more in sponsoring such events so as to possibly lead to a reduction in the price of tickets.

I am sure that these companies would find that their participation in such events is a good way of marketing their products.
